Chris Levitt raises a glass

Christopher Paul Levitt

8/14/1977 — 5/6/2007, St. Andrews Tavern and Coed Football Team Mate. Rest in Peace.

Our world here in Orlando has been rocked this week by the very unexpected and wasteful taking of life.

We are all in mourning. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult and painful time. He was, and will always be, one of the people you never forget. Many of us today are feeling emotions that are awash with shock, pain, hurt and sadness. Emotions that, in time, will be replaced with memories of a good friend and team mate.

Chris was a guy with character, a quick whit and a permanent smile. He always entertained with tales of his great adventures, of which there were many.

He will be sadly missed at the pub, and on the field, where he was always guaranteed to give 100% (and usually more!). Only one week ago he scored a cracker of a goal that he relived with us all many times, a goal that apparently would have ensured a trial for his beloved Leeds United.

And he was always there to back you up, whether on the pitch or elsewhere, we were always thankful for that. The whole St. Andrews Family of patrons, players, staff and friends mourn a great loss today, as do so many others who had the fortune to have Chris in their lives, rest in peace mate.

Please leave your thoughts, comments and anecdotes to our beloved and faithful team mate, friend and colleague. The one, and only, Chris Levitt.

Chris will be sorely missed.  Although I only knew Chris for a few years, I considered him a close dear friend.  He made Bonnie and I feel right at home from the first moment we met him.  I know over time, the loss will weaken but the love and memories will only grow stronger.  GO LEEDS!!!!

Thanks for putting this up Adam. This is a tragic loss for all of us and I can not imagine playing soccer (football) for St. Andrew’s without Levitt out there. I am so glad that he got to score his perfect goal the other weekend at Lake Sylvan - he deserved it. He will be sorely missed and never forgotten. Love you Chris.

Thanks also for everyone who was at St. Andrew’s yesterday to celebrate Chris - Some of my favorite stories were when Keith and Jackie Walker made the distinct comment that their lighters and cigarettes will finally be safe smile Also, I hope Bungay can post the “Best Ass Competition” story. I couldn’t do it justice.

Chris, from the moment I met you ... you were that person who was friendly, genuine, loyal and you always kept everyone on their toes (not just on the soccer pitch).
You would always give me grief about my dates/girlfriends ... you would always tell me how slow I was on the pitch (I did go around you once or twice) ... and of course you let me have it when England beat Ecuador at the 2006 World Cup.

My friend, so long for now, your love for everyone around you (and your never ending smile) will always be a trademark that we will never forget ... GO ON LEEDS !!!

To Chris, I was always “The Librarian”... to me, Chris was the guy that could always make me smile.  He was the first guy to give me grief about dating Roddy, suggesting that he would be a much better fit for me grin  He was the guy that always managed to find his way into other peoples pictures… because he loved the camera.  And not only was he dedicated to showing up for his games and giving everything he had, but you could always find him supporting the other teams as well.  My thoughts and prayers go out to all his friends and family that got to share in his life longer than I did, but I’m thankful for the memories I will always have of the scrappy, smiling guy you couldn’t help but love to be around.

We are going to miss you Chris.  I hope you will enjoy us practicing and playing football from up there, on the best seat, right besides Papa-Chu (God).

So what else can be said about Chris.  While playing in the COEDS Chris was my number one defender; if I could get into his head and help him control his eagerness to go score a goal up front.  As soon as I saw Chris chasing after an opponent I knew that the other player was not going anywhere and that was wether Chris had to elbow the person or slimply sneak through the players legs in order to take the ball.

Ever since I met him in the Open team I knew that he had my back.  He even got kicked off the field after he got even with another player who just finished kicking me.
Chris will be greatly missed and I am deeply sadden by the entire situation, but one thing is for sure….Chris lived every day to the fullest, just how he played every game.

I didn’t know know Chris for very long, but I do know that just like any other member of St. Andrew’s I considered him family.  Rest in peace mate.

The Last game of the Season, I sat on the sidelines and enjoyed watching a hard fought 1-0 victory for the over 40’s to win the league. Chris came over to me and asked me how I was doing and when I would be back on the pitch.I didnt realize at that time this would be my last conversation with Chris. I always enjoyed sharing a pint with him in the pub-he always had a smile, one that would just welcome you. The following week my Mom gave both Bobby and I a gift for Easter. It was the team photo after we won the league. Bobby and I laughed when we saw Chris’s Mug shot in the photo. My brother remarked how he always got in the photo and how I usually miss the team pictures. Chris made us laugh that day. Today I still feel shocked and pray for comfort for all who are mourning.God Bless

Man my stomach still hurts thinking about this. Is it really real?? Some of us just played with him Wednesday night, he played really well too, not one shinpad pass!! I consoled him before the game about Leeds going down because I was genuinely upset for guys like himself, Tim and Simon. Guys who are hardcore lifelong fans who don’t jump on the teams of the moment.

It was this type of passion and committment that made Chris the teammate and friend he was.

Chris your body may have left this earth way too soon but your spirit and all the wonderful memories we have of you will live on forever.

Rest in peace no. 7. It will never be the same around here without you but we are all blessed to have had you in our presence.

It’s taken hours of trying, to add my pennies-worth to the wonderful tributes I have read over the last two days both here and from other sources. The impromptu gathering yesterday at “The Tavern” showed how much this little lad will be missed. You know, he’s pushed me in a freezing cold swimming pool (twice), he’s pulled my shorts down in the middle of a packed St. Andrews pub (twice) and he rings me and tells me Leeds have lost when we actually won! I had to share that one special thing with him ......... Leeds United. His passion could probably have kept Leeds up all on it’s own if we could have canned it and sent it across the atlantic. But that part of Chris can tell you a lot about the lad himself. Single minded and unwavering. Devoted to his friends, his team and the biggest “Mummy’s boy” you could ever meet (but you would never tell him so).
The next few weeks will be difficult to get through especially for those who were closest to Chris. We will certainly have chance though to celebrate Chris’s life in the upcoming days and I suggest that we all do so in typical Chris fashion ......... 100 percent. He would not want to see us sad. He’ll be watching from above to make sure you have another beer (and steel a another cigarette!) before you bid him farewell ........ so don’t let him down.

I sit here and struggle for the words to convey my thoughts about this senseless tragedy. Chris was a member of our St Andrews family, and that family gathered at our “home” last night to share stories, hugs and tears, remembering all the times that Chris made us laugh, smile, or feel better about a bad day. He certainly had that way about him. I’ll never forget that crooked smile, the one that said, ‘Yeah, I ate the canary, and it tasted damn good.’

“Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.” ~ Robert Frost

Rest in peace, Chris. You will be dearly missed.

The simple fact that the lad got so excited and nervous before every match he had to throw up shows how much he enjoyed every moment on the pitch and off. He played with the the thought he was the tallest and strongest player on the pitch and off it he was the life of the party. I could go on about how he was always out of position but somehow recovered just in time or that damn smile when he made a run to try and score a goal. first a skip, then a trip,  the ball rolls down the thigh, shin pad then boot and finally in the back of the net. Not a game will go bye without missing him on the squad.

I grabbed this quote from “The Shawshank Redemption” but it sums up the spirt Chris was and is

“...I have to remind myself that some birds aren’t meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up DOES rejoice. Still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they’re gone. I guess I just miss my friend.”

God’s speed and rest in peace lad

I love you Chris. I cannot crasp this kind of senseless violence that has taken you. I love the Frost Bobby. I will leave it to A.E. Housman

The time you won your town the race
We chaired you through the market-place;
Man and boy stood cheering by,
And home we brought you shoulder-high.

Today,the road all runners come,
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
Andset you at your threshold down,
Townsman of a stiller town.

Smart lad,to slip betimes away
From fields where glory does does not stay,
And earlythough the laurel grows
It withers quicker than a rose.

Eyes the shady night has shut
Cannot see the record cut,
And silence sounds no worse than cheers
After earth has stopped the ears.

Now you will not swell the rout
Of lads that wore their honors out,
Runners whom renown outran
And the name died before the man.

So set, before its echoes fade,
The Fleet foot on the sill of shade,
And hold to the low lintel up
The still-defended challenge-cup.

And round that early-laureled head
Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead,
And find unwithered on its curls
The garland briefer than a girl’s.

I know its deep guys but I will never understand life taken before its time.
